On OnenessWe are all one - we are not separate! Before we were born into our body, this container, that part of us which is eternal, our soul, our spirit, or whatever term you wish to use, decided with the Higher Power’s help what we wanted or needed learn or to accomplish in this life cycle. This Higher Power readily agreed because what we learn provides this Power with a little more understanding of Her creation. While the Higher Power is all knowing, knowing is not the same as understanding through experiencing. That is why each of us agreed to come into this life, to learn and to accomplish mutually agreed upon tasks and life experiences. Part of our pre-life agreement was to accomplish these tasks but the Higher Power also agreed to remind us what those tasks were. Because each situation is different, based on your life experiences, acquired knowledge, and spirituality, each life event allows this Higher Power to see the same situation from many different perspectives. We are extensions of this Higher Power; we are not only students but also in a small way, teachers. That is why this Higher Power keeps reminding us of our pre-life cycle agreement - not to punish us but in the hope that we will finally understand and accomplish the goals we set for ourselves. Our first hurdle in accepting this concept is; "What about free will, what about our individual lives?" Our current condition causes us to believe that we must be individuals and not part of the Whole. We find it easier to believe that each of us is a separate entity without any connection to each other or the universe in which we exist. Some religions support this individuality by teaching that individually we will be judged for our sins, our actions. This teaching implies that we are individuals and separate from the Whole. I can’t agree with this view or teaching. We only appear to be separate and individual; we have only to look to our origins to see that regardless of appearances, we are all part of the Whole and the Whole is that Higher Power. This means we are all connected, not only to each other but also to all things in the totality of creation. This includes all animate and apparent inanimate objects. Just as each cell or atom in our body is separate from all other cells or atoms; they fit together to comprise a whole - our body. To understand this all-connected belief, we must start with a basic, complex question: "Where do we come from?" Let’s start at the beginning, at least my version of that beginning. If we travel backward in time until this universe or creation did not exist - what did exist? The Higher Power was there in some form or perhaps without form. This Power existed because It has no beginning and no end; It is eternal. If this Higher Power was all that existed before anything else then where did this creation originate? Where did the material that now comprises this creation originate? The only answer: it must have come from and be part of the Higher Power. I don’t believe that the Higher Power created something from nothing, although that would be possible, but rather used Itself to create this creation and all of its components. Scientist may say that energy existed before all else. If energy was the Prime Originator of all that now exists then who’s to say that Energy isn’t just another name for Higher Power? For what now exists, including all life forms, intelligent or instinctual, had to be created by something with intelligence, desire, and perhaps need. If energy can have intelligence, as I believe it does, it can answer to any Higher Power name we may choose. To assume that this creation is the result of chance or random possibilities is more unbelievable to me than assuming there is intelligence behind and within all creation. Further, I believe that all creation was created from this Higher Power and continues to be part of this Higher Power. I believe that all - everything - every atom and molecule are connected and are but parts of the Whole. Therefore, everything is connected and everything is also interconnected. This means that if you needlessly destroy anything you affect the Higher Power and therefore yourself. Of course, we can’t really destroy anything because all things are just energy with shape and form. Energy cannot be created or destroyed and because I believe that Energy is just another word for this Higher Power, this law of thermodynamics and physics makes sense. With the universe created, we must look to the origins of all life forms, including humans. I know that within this vast creation there are many universes and there must be other intelligent life forms. Therefore, what I believe about life on this little backwater planet and humans applies to all life forms regardless of its location. So, where did we humans originate? Some prefer to believe in evolution some in instantaneous creation. To me, both are magical and a miracle; therefore, how we originally arrived on this planet is not as important as where were we before we energized these containers we call our bodies. To assume that life is created at conception is to give the power of creation to humans. It is to assume that we can create energy, something that even the Higher Power may be reluctant to do. What this means to me is that what we really are - our essence, our soul, our spirit - had to exist before conception, before birth. This body is but a container, a receptacle that our essence energizes and brings to apparent life. As to where we originated, why from the Higher Power - where else. We come from this Power and we return to this Power; it’s as simple and as complex as that. Others may disagree but this is what I believe. I believe there is room for all honest beliefs. What the truth is will be revealed when this container is laid aside and we return to our origins. Now, where does free will come into this. Just because we have a divine spark within us doesn’t mean that we cannot do as we wish. This life cycle is for learning and experiencing - not for being afraid of living. Yes, we can do things that are wrong for ourselves and those around us. We can damage our bodies and even our spirits; however, this Higher Power will keep reminding us of our pre-life agreement. We can choose to ignore the reminder - that’s free will. There is room in the Higher Power for all types of behavior, all types of actions. Good or bad is a human concept not a Higher Power judgment. This Power sees only actions and deeds. Who knows, maybe the results of what we call a bad or evil act is necessary for the spiritual growth of someone else. All things have a purpose; this Higher Power uses all and nothing is wasted. If this life cycle were free of problems and troubles, how would we experience spiritual growth. If we were perfect, what would this Higher Power learn from us and why would this Power need us? Learning usually requires mistakes. We make those mistakes and in the process the Higher Power learns from us. While we are here in this life cycle, we have an obligation to try our best to accomplish what we agreed to before we energized this container and the Higher Power has an obligation to remind us of our agreement. This Power must remind us because if we remembered what we agreed to we would also remember what we had and how we existed before coming here. Would we learn as much if we "knew" without doubt what awaits us regardless of what we do while here? Learning requires uncertainty. We learn so we can prepare for what the future might throw at us. If we knew the future - would we learn things that we didn’t need? All learning is useful because everything and anything we know can be used to look at today’s problems and help us to see unexpected and unusual solutions. The only fear I have is that when this life cycle is done, I will be judged. Judged not by the Higher Power but by that spirit, essence that is me, which belongs to and is part of the Higher Power. While I know my essence will be completely fair, I fear that what I have learned and accomplished will be woefully short of what I agreed to before coming into this life cycle. I know that the Higher Power will not mind but that which is me will probable not be so kind. None of this talk about me means that I am separate from the Whole. I am an individual only in the sense that I have free will, I can act against the wishes of the Higher Power, against my own agreement and my best interest. This higher Power does not force you to do what you came here to do but It does let you know you’re going against your wishes and, therefore, Its wishes. Once rejoined with the Higher Power, we will see what our selfishness has done but we are still part of this Power - that cannot and will not ever change. Free will allows us to do bad or even evil acts. This Higher Power will not punish us for these acts, we will punish ourselves. Because this Power is total Love, It does not judge or punish, It only shows us our pre-life agreement and we will judge our life from there. If we have not held up our end of the pre-life agreement, we will want to return to complete our agreement and hope to go beyond that agreement. The Higher Power will forgive and forget but will we be as understanding of our failures? Author: Don Miller
