Common GroundHistory And Values Are Our Common GroundWe are losing our history, our heritage, and our American pride. Without these things, we lose our direction. Without our nationalistic pride, we too easily accept half-truths and lies. We point to the failures of our system of government, the imperfections of our founders and leaders. We degrade their efforts based on their human frailties. We discount what this nation and its leaders have accomplished by pointing only to what was not accomplished. Some people are never satisfied with what we have done. It is easier to find fault than it is to work to correct these faults. Some want to destroy this nation and its people; some want to take us in a different direction; some want us to forget our history and rewrite it to fit their views. To survive, we must seek common ground; we must seek unity. As one example, we cannot find common ground or unity while we have hundreds of languages. Without accurate communications, we cannot understand each other. Without understanding, we become divided. Airports worldwide use English as the official, standard air-traffic control language but we cannot even agree on conducting our government’s business in one language. We encourage racial and ethnic divisions by not insisting on the use of one national language in our public affairs. In our efforts at being politically correct and multicultural, we deny our children their best opportunity at a good life. English is the language of business and commerce not only here in America but also in many other nations. Americans who cannot speak, read, write, and understand English are operating under a major handicap. Who benefits from this problem other than the educators who insist that some students cannot learn English without prolonged immersion in bilingual classes where the student never seems to learn English. It is time to stop "managing" students and start "educating" them. We must reawaken American nationalism and patriotism. We must insist that each citizen knows the history of America, can read and write English. There is no wrong in being proud of our nation, its history, its people, and its language. Without a common language, common values, and a knowledge of our American heritage we can never truly be a united nation. Divided nations fall to united nations. Author: Don Miller
