On ControlAre We Really In control? Most of us seek to control our lives and our destines. We become frustrated when we feel some one or some thing is controlling us or when events are beyond our control. We want to feel that our decisions and our actions control our destinies. Control is power. Power to change things the way we want. Power to be what we want. We seek to control the events in our lives but we also recognize that we don’t always know what we really want or what is best. We all have sought for and gotten what we thought we wanted only to realize that we really didn’t want it - at least not for long. Herein is the conflict and the problem. We want to control our lives but we don’t always know what we really want. We expect and want guidance from a higher source and we get upset when that guidance is slow in coming or doesn’t appear to be what we expected or desired. When we are ill, we want to be well - NOW. When we have a need, we want it met - NOW. Faith and belief falters when things fail to go as we want so we fall back on excuses and reasons. "I must not need it; otherwise, I would have gotten it". We assume our deity had His or Her reasons for not providing our requests but we are still left with the feeling of being at someone’s or something’s mercy. Because we can’t see the total picture, we feel our lack of control. It is much like one spot of paint feeling left out because it doesn’t know that it is but a small part of the total picture. Also because we expect immediate results, we often miss them when they do appear at an unexpected time. Belief is the first step in any progress toward control. You must believe something can be accomplished before it can be made real. Belief may not be instantaneous and it may require a lifetime to sprout. You may not know how something can be done but if you believe it can be done then events seem to conspire to provide the answer. Belief is the essence of life and the wellspring of control. You cannot control your life unless you believe in your life. To control your life and its purpose, you must believe in its direction and its purpose; otherwise, your control varies and, therefore, so do your results. Belief is a force, whether that force provides positive or negative results is based on the person. To accomplish anything, you must not only believe it can be done but also desire to accomplish it. There are levels of belief. Most of us have no problem having belief with doubt but most never achieve belief without doubt. Belief is not faith. Faith is placed in something external while belief is placed in ourselves. Faith is acceptance without investigation while belief is based on knowledge. Faith accepts; belief demand answers and proof. Faith is unwilling to look at the opposite side of a question; belief demands we investigate both sides before accepting either position. Faith studies only those views that support it; belief studies both pros and cons and then forms an opinion. While faith and belief can help with what we feel is our lack of control, they don’t eliminate the feeling. We still ask, "Why me?" We are not totally satisfied with the platitude, "It’s for the best". We wonder why we need to suffer even if we caused that suffering. We think we deserve better and wonder why we don’t get it. Some of the things that happen may be because we are at war with ourselves. Our conscious and subconscious minds have different results in mind and because the subconscious is usually more powerful and always aware, that’s what occurs. It is hard to imagine that our thoughts do attract and form our reality. Perhaps that is why when I think money I usually get bills? Author: Don Miller
