Socialism’s AppealWhy Socialism Is AttractiveI wrote an article on Socialism’s Weakness awhile back so I thought I should write about why socialism is attractive to so many people. Socialism must appeal to a lot of people because a lot of countries have adopted it as a form of government. Socialism is not necessary anti-democratic. It can exist in a democratic form and have all the trappings of democracy but socialism isn’t equivalent to a democracy. Socialism appeals to both our lowest as well as our highest ideals and aspirations. Socialism appeals to our laziness, our greed, and our concepts of rights without responsibilities. Socialism also appeals to our desire that those in need are helped, that those too old to work have retirement benefits, that those who can’t afford health care are not over looked. Because socialism offers a little something for everyone, it has become a very popular form of government. Because it appeals to our best and to our worst human traits, it is difficult to dispute its effectiveness. Because socialism can coexist with democracy, it is seen as superior to democracy alone. Because of the benefits socialism offers, most of us prefer it. Most of us don’t mind being taken care of or ensured of our existence with minimal effort on our part. Many of us believe it is the duty and responsibility of those better off to help those in need; the rich should support the poor. We easily believe that the rich have more than they need and see no wrong in taking from them to help those in need even if the needy refuse to help themselves. Socialism appeals to the have-nots more than to those that have. We all tend to want things we haven’t worked for or can’t afford. We are envious of those that seem to have it all: money, health, and happiness. Socialism seems to offer all these things without any real cost to the majority. Socialism is a test of our character. The more we believe we have a right to things without any effort on our part, the more we believe socialism is the answer. The more we believe that our life and our welfare depends on others, the more we accept socialism. Socialism has good intentions but once we step on that path it becomes increasingly difficult to escape its influence. Politicians are but one group that love dependent people. People dependent on the government can be easily led and they tend to accept rather than analyze. Socialism is the greatest threat to true democracy and to independent doers and thinkers. Socialism fosters a herd mentality, a follow-the-leader attitude. This does not mean that smart people are not attracted to socialism. It does mean that people who believe they know what’s best for others prefer socialism because it proves their elite-ness. Socialism is especially attractive to people that believe they are better that most and believe they have the right to tell others how to live. Socialism has its attractions and for that reason it is difficult to escape its siren call.
