Voter Fraud

Voter Fraud Or Voter Selfishness

Voter fraud. No, I’m not referring to the Florida 2000 presidential election problems. Both sides made a mess out of that situation and it gave the Democrats something to be steamed about. No, the voter fraud I’m referring to is much larger, more pervasive, and much more acceptable.

Most of us willingly, knowingly perpetrate voter fraud each time we vote in a local or nation election.

Voter fraud is caring more about political affiliations than about the issues. Voter fraud is worrying more about what’s happening to us rather than what’s happening to our community or our nation.

Voter fraud is being bought off by politicians who promise pie-in-the-sky and tell us what we want to hear. We don’t wonder how a politician can deliver on those promises without harming someone else. Nor do we care so long as we are promised what appears to be good just for us.

Selfishness may make good politics but it destroys our community and our nation promise by promise. Usually, what is best for the strength and welfare of our nation is not always in our own immediate, best interest.

Voter fraud is when we know more about our favorite baseball team than we do about the issues facing our community and our nation. We know the batting averages of our favorite baseball players but very little about what national politicians are doing for or against our nation interest. We have come to expect members of the two parties to sound like disgruntled fans at a sporting event. Booing, hissing, name calling has become the norm but we tolerate it so long as we dislike the object of these ill-mannered tactics.

Voter fraud is deceiving ourselves by thinking what’s good for me is good for my community and my nation. Voter fraud is eagerly voting for the person that promises the most and the best without thinking who will supply those gifts or even if those promises are possible.

Voter fraud is the willingness to tax the next person so long as we get a promise of lower taxes. We gladly accept federal money without a thought as to the source of that money. We expect more local and national services but are unwilling to pay for those services but expect someone else to pay.

Our collective memories are short and we often lack foresight. We vote for politicians who tell us he or she has the answers to all problems without thinking that simple solutions don’t solve problems but usually create more problems, although, perhaps not in our lifetime.

We want peace in the world but refuse to accept the responsibility that comes with being part of the freest, richest, and most powerful nation in this world. We expect to change the world without cost, without effort. We allow terrorists to attack us but don’t see the rationale in a strong, prolong attack against those fanatics that want to wipe us off of the face of this Earth. We have become a nation of starters but poor finishers. Too many of us want to treat terrorists like bratty kids: a little spanking, small time-out and we consider the job done.

We cater to those who, while enjoying the wealth of this nation, blame it and us for all the problems of this world. If our government tries to solve a problem, it’s their fault if the solution is not easy. Voter fraud is accepting that we or our government is to blame because terrorist attack us. Voter fraud is listening to those who wish to harm us and being unwilling take the fight to them.

As voters, there are too many complainers and not enough supporters. As voters, we want immediate results and easy solutions to vast, complicated problems. We eagerly back a politician who tells us what needs to be done but we rapidly turn to complainers if the task is not done quickly and efficiently.

We complain because we weren’t told how hard, how long, or how dangerous the task would be. Never mind that if we had been told the truth, we wouldn’t have accepted the task in the first place. We must remember that we elect officials to act in the best interest of the nation not in their party’s interest our even our own individual best interest.

Voter fraud continues when we vote for politicians who are more interested in themselves or their party than in our nation. Voter fraud is failing to demand integrity, honesty, and leadership by example from our elected officials. Voter fraud is accepting that we are lied to and still voting for the perjurer. We expect change while voting for the same politicians who refuse to change.

The real voter fraud is we the voter. We are too lazy to study the issues, too short-sighted to ask hard questions, too complacent about a politician’s character, and too selfish to demand more from our elected officials.

When looking for voter fraud, we must first look in the mirror.
