Which God Reply 1From: Chuck Kovalik In your article, you ponder the question: why can't we agree on a gender of God. The truth is, no one has been arguing one way or the other. To limit the architect of existence to the mere placement of an X or Y chromosome is stupid and narrow-minded. Any one with any grasp of theology would recognize that applying the pronoun "He" to God is merely a cultural archetype paired to venerability and wisdom. You also mention that God is used as justification for heinous acts by terrorist organizations. Well, what else is new? People have been using any number of justifications for their own agendas for all of human history. It was unwise of these particular groups to rely on something that can disprove their claims in black and white. God said, "love thy neighbor" not, "kill black people because you think they are causing our country to deteriorate." As is my experience, hate of most kinds is derived from ignorance and half truths. In your article, you also attempt to give meaning and traceable HUMAN personality traits to someone not human and beyond comprehension.
Author's Reply You are correct in that there is no real debate of the gender of God because male is the assumed and accepted gender at least for most Christians. If you doubt that, try using She or IT instead of He when referring to God and see what happens. While the gender debate may be stupid and narrow-minded, it would serve to reduce the male domination currently held by most Christian denominations. By making God male, it demotes the female. Look at the leaders and the positions in most Christian churches - almost all male but it is changing in some of the more liberal churches. Do you think male domination in religion would be acceptable if God was considered female or male/female? God has human characteristics simply because God and Gods are created and defined by humans. And in order for humans to understand God, humans attributes are applied even if they are not appropriate. Your concept of God is a reflection of your needs, your desires, and your personal growth. Also, God is often a reflection on what you have been taught. Most people don’t really think about their beliefs; they only obey if it fits their desire or they may ignore any religious teachings to avoid any conflicts. Send a Reply
