On Democracy
Democracy promotes peace, or so this is what some studies suggest and
what our current president, G.W. Bush, believes. If this is true, why is
it true? Is democracy the best form of government and is it a stable
government?
On Protesters
Protesters are really beginning to annoy me. Not so much because they
protest but because they almost never offer an intelligent alternative to
what they are protesting. Protesters annoy me because they are acting like
some Democrats: complaining without offering solutions.
Government And Religion
Yes, I know some are thinking that governments and religions are not
alike or even related but it may depend on how one chooses to view them.
One primarily deals with laws and the other primarily deals with faith.
Islam In Crisis
Muslims must decide who speaks for Islam. Who defines Islam? Is Islam
defined by Osama bin Laden and his ilk or by some yet to be named Islamic
clergy? Bin Laden has defined Islam as a war-like, terrorism sponsoring
religion.
Katrina's Aftermath
Hurricane Katrina has come and gone but the politics will live on for more years
than the recovery takes. You see, politics isn’t about reality it's about
perception. Everything from births to deaths and especially disasters are
great political fodder.
Justice And Beliefs
Justice must spring from laws not religious or non-religious beliefs.
Justice must conform to a codified set or rules, regulations, and laws
that serve everyone, regardless of their belief structure.
Who Speaks For Casey Sheehan
In all the hype about Cindy’s grief over her son’s death, no one is
asking what her son, Casey, would say about his mother’s actions. Cindy
can speak for herself but Casey cannot.
What Is Life
The Terri Schiavo case has made the question of what is life a
necessary one. Most of us assume we know what life is but do we. Is life
simply a functional organism; an organism that performs functions normal
to its species?
Stages Of Life
Life has four distinct stages: youth, adulthood, old age, and death.
Some of us will experience all four stage while some will only experience
two or perhaps three of these stages. Each stage has its own fascinations,
its own problems, and its own inducements.
On Treason
We don’t hear much about treason anymore. We are so determined to talk
about our freedoms that we seldom think about our responsibilities to
freedom and to those who actively oppose those freedoms.
On Social Security
Most people who explore the Social Security system soon realize that
while it has good intentions, the system is a poor investment and is very
poorly operated. When you consider that a person pays approximately 6.2%
of his or her income into the Social Security system each year,
Information Glut
Information has no value unless it helps us improve our lives, improve
our decisions, and increase our understanding. For information to be
useful, we must know how to handle the flow of information, how to control
the deluge, and how to prevent information overload.
Evolution Or Creation
I have concluded that the two major theories of the origins of this
universe are not really about religion or science. These two views,
evolution and creation, are about two views of the human condition.
Easter Question
Why is the birth of Jesus given an exact date but his death and
resurrection are symbolic dates? History tells us that Jesus was not
actually born on December 25th but the Church settled on that Pagan
holiday date.
Tenure On Trial
The words and actions of Ward Churchill of the University of Colorado
have reminded all of us that free speech is not free nor without
responsibility.
Allies And Enemies
The Iraqi war has proven that not all allies are friends or even have a
view in common with America of what terrorism is. The world appears to be
divided into two major camps:
Biocommunications
Deepak Chopra in The Spontaneous Fulfillment Of Desire mentions
experiments performed by people at his center that show cells from a
person react just to the thought of that person thinking of harming
themselves.
What If
What if your major beliefs were proven to be wrong. What if the beliefs
you have held and accumulated over a lifetime were proven unnecessary.
On Laziness
There is an art and a science to being lazy. Laziness is not idleness
but the art and science of the appropriate action at the correct time.
Laziness is when the body is idle but the mind is active. Laziness is
looking for the easiest and best way to accomplish a task before starting
that task.
