Government In Debate

Government In Debate

We have a debate going on as to the direction our government should take. The debate pits Democrats against Republicans but it really is a debate between liberals and conservatives , secularists, and religions.

The debate has turned nasty. Democrats, used to power, are fighting to return to power. Republicans, new to power, are trying to stay popular and in power. What this means is that government isn’t about the people but about those who wish to remain our representatives. The crassness of some attaches displays the true hatred for some in one party toward some in the opposition party.

This debate is about the direction our government should take. It is about what government should do for its people and what the people should do for themselves. The debate is about the future of government and the nature of politics.

The debate is primarily between the extreme Left and the extreme Right and the moderate majority, as always, are in the middle. Because the debate is a fight between extremes, moderates are left disinterested because they prefer neither extreme. Candidates are being selected to run for office not by the majority but by the well-heeled minority.

The Left say they want a welfare state, a redistribution of wealth, and a government that gives to the poor, the rich can take care of themselves. Notice that those pushing for redistribution of the wealth usually have their wealth where it cannot be touched by changes in the tax code. Just look where George Soras has his money - offshore so he doesn’t mind what the tax code says because it would have only a minor effect on his wealth.

The Right appears to want religion to be a mainstay of our lives. They want individual responsibility and assistance to those in need. The Right waves the flag, God, and apple pie and seem to prefer a strict interpretation of our Constitution.

The Left appears to want an European version of Democracy, which leans heavily toward Socialism, higher taxes, more pay, less work. The Left love judges that view the Constitution just as a piece of paper that can be interpreted without any real understanding of the framers original intentions and based on how other countries deal with the same situation.

The Left favors a strong United Nations and weak, compliant world governments. The Left yearns for a world government . Why? I really don’t know. Perhaps they believe a world government would make war obsolete, that top-notch health care would become universal. The Left doesn’t see the corruption in the U.N. or the bias or the greed that comes with power. The Left is as blind to their faults as the Right is to their over-zealousness. Both tend to overlook the human weakness that abide in their desires.

Government must provide justice and security for its citizens. Government should provide equal opportunity while allowing equal access to those opportunities. It is not the role of government to ensure that all its citizens take advantage of those opportunities. Government should provide an opportunity for education but it cannot guarantee that each person takes the same advantage of that education.

Government is a system of rules, regulations, and laws. The interpretation of those rules and laws is done by people who represent the government. Our government is nothing more than a system of individual’s opinions. Opinions that change as those elected replace those who were in office. Any consistency in our government is based primarily on the willingness of the new office holder to continue with the ideas of the old office holder.

This really means the form of government is less important that the integrity of the officials that represent that government. Both the Left and Right are blinded by their fanaticism to an ideology. Both see perfection according to their own views.

Elected or appointed officials act as they see best for themselves and their party and rarely in the best interest of the people and the nation they are paid and are elected to represent.
