Parties
Parties attract people like nectar attracts bees.
They arrive in swarms of one’s, two’s, or three’s,
A constant influx of people knocking at the door.
Most are strangers so the host’s first chore
Is to introduce one to all at least once, then
Each will find their own group in which to blend.
They "talk" of current events and "listen"
Until eyes dull and empty glasses glisten.
Then like drones from the hive, each group sends
A seeker of refreshments for new-found friends.
Buzz of conversations sound like fluttering wings
As the human animal drinks and struts and sings.
Booze flows while inhibitions flee and unbidden
Wants unravel masks behind which is hidden
Each person’s self and their fantasies and dreams,
Which may never come true, or so it always seems.
The search begins for someone to stay this night
To make sorrows, boredom, and fears take flight.
Thus the party slowly disperses in two’s,
A moment of happiness donated by booze.
